Have You Tried Kayak Fly Fishing?

What you might be missing with kayak fly fishing

Kayak fly fishing is the next level of fly fishing adventure. In kayak fly fishing, you can be right in the middle of the fishing action rather than standing on the shore. Kayak fly fishing might be just the thing for the fisherman who wants to try something a little different, and a lot more fun.

What you want to know first

At first, kayak fly fishing can seem to be much simpler than regular fly fishing because you don’t have to cast nearly as far.

However, you’ll want to realize that it takes a fairly skilled kayaker to maintain your balance while you are throwing a cast. And when you are reeling in your cast, you might also tip over the kayak.

To prevent this in kayak fly fishing, you’ll want to perfect your balance first.

This might mean that a beginner isn’t the right person to be trying kayak fly fishing right away.

Did you know. . . Bows and arrows were not used in hunting from native kayaks. One of the reasons is because balance was hard to maintain, but also the water made the bow strings useless.

What’s great about kayak fly fishing?

Kayak fly fishing allows you to cover more water than you could when you were traveling by land.

You can move quickly from area to area until you find just the right spot.

The kayak itself makes for great kayak fly fishing as it is quiet and slow moving. Many fish are disturbed by the loud boats that attempt to get to better locations.

But in a kayak, you can slip into the fish filled waters more easily.

Do you need special equipment?

With kayak fly fishing, you may want to look for poles that are easy to maneuver and even shorter than you might normally see.

Since you’ll have the boat in the way of casts, you want to make sure that the pole also stays out of your way. But other than that, kayak fly fishing is just like the regular fly fishing.

However in kayak fly fishing, you can leave the waders at home.
